One of the biggest stars on contemporary jazz scene, contrabassists Avishai Cohen is in a way the discovery of Belgrade Jazz Festival, where he performed in 2007. The audience was captivated by the eclectic, contemporary jazz approach with the hints of Jewish musical tradition, as the charismatic contrabass player became the global forerunner of current generation of jazz authors. On his second Belgrade concert, he will present two new exceptional talents from Israeli scene – pianist Omri Mor and percussionist Itamar Doari.

All-star quartet Aziza brings together four big names in contemporary jazz. The oldest, contrabassist Dave Holland is a living participant of jazz-rock revolution, subsequently he lead several critically acclaimed groups. Chris Potter has several awards for the best tenor saxophonist in the world in his collection. Along with solo projects, Eric Harland is a close collaborator of Charles Lloyd and Joshua Redman. Finally, Lionel Loueke is considered to be the greatest guitar talent of the new generation, who has interesting solo records under his belt.

Jack DeJohnette Trio featuring Ravi Coltrane and Matt Garrison

The most famous jazz drummer on the contemporary scene, Jack DeJohnette achieved an impressive career as a leader and sideman by working with many great jazz musicians, ranging from Charles Lloyd, Miles Davis, Sonny Rollins, Herbie Hancock, Joe Henderson and Michael Breaker, all the way to Keith Jarret. As he had the opportunity to play with John Coltrane, today he is evoking a memory of this legendary saxophonist and personal icon with his current collaborators. Ravi is Coltrane’s son, while Matt is a child of Coltrane’s contrabassist Jimmy Garrison.

Antonio Serrano Quintet Flame&Co

Antonio Serrano, who was a student of the famous Larry Adler, is currently one of the most virtuoso world players of chromatic harmonica with an interest in various musical worlds, ranging from classical music, jazz, blues, tango and flamenco, all the way to movie scores (films by Pedro Almodovar). As a member of the final ensemble of legendary Paco de Lucia, he also became a pioneer in introducing of harmonica in flamenco and that aspect of his work will be presented in Belgrade, with the quartet appropriately named – Flame&Co.

Alfredo Rodriguez Trio

After he impressed Quincey Jones in the finals of the competition for young pianists on Monterey Jazz Festival, Cuban pianist Alfredo Rodriguez (1985) immediately got the offer that is not to be refused – to come to the United States and begin the collaboration with the famous producer. Following the successful debut on the leading international festivals, under Jones’s tutelage, he signed the contract with the label Mack Avenue, which so far released his three albums. In the domain of jazz piano, Alfredo is a great follower of a virtuoso expression of Chucho Valdes and Michel Camilo.

Traditionally every year the festival presents an original domestic production by some of the most significant authors from Serbia. This time, focus is on Vlada Maričić, who recently celebrated three decades of professional career. This pianist and composer blends jazz, Balkan, Roma and Cuban tradition, resulting in an amalgamation of similar, yet different sensibilities. Special guest on the concert will be Brian Lynch, renowned American trumpet player, recipient of Grammy award for the best Latin Jazz album in 2007.

Tord Gustavsen Quartet

The pianist and composer Tord Gustavsen blends melancholy of European North, Scandinavian spiritual tradition and ESM art philosophy into music of magnificent beauty. Following a trilogy of albums done by a trio, he included an experienced saxophonist Tore Brunborg into the group, which added to the significant, lighter note to the music. This quartet researches, integrates and serves “the Holly Trinity” of emotional intensity, elegance and meditative musical breath, paving the way of the new jazz art in 21st century.

Vincent Peirani: „Living Being“

The accordion player Vincent Peirani is a leading name in French jazz today. Following a long career as a sideman in the bands led by experienced musicians, he released his fist solo album three years ago. French Jazz Academy presented him with the award for the musician of the year, whereby last year he received another three big prizes: two German ECHO awards (ensemble and instrumentalist of the year), as well as the most important accolade so far – Les Victoires du Jazz for the jazz musician of the year in France. Living Being is his new, fusion project.

Gianluca Petrella Cosmic Renaissance

After the unforgettable performance in the quintet of trumpet player Enrique Rava and intimate set with pianist Giovanni Guidi, trombone player Gianlucca Petrella is finally presenting his solo project – quintet Cosmic Renaissance. Along with numerous awards given to him by Italian jazz community in different categories, Petrella is the first Italian laureate of the Down Beat magazine award (as an upcoming trombone player), as well as recipient of Paul Acket award, presented by North Sea Jazz Festival from Rotterdam to the most promising young musicians.

Rob Mazurek & Sao Paulo Underground

Trio San Paolo Underground is led by cornetist and composer Rob Mazurek, one of the most creative American contemporary artists – he released over 50 albums since mid-90s as the leader of different groups, out of which around 20 records were issued in the last five years. In the beginning of previous decade he lived in Brazil, where he founded a group Sao Paolo Underground with which he presents a mix of Brazilian tradition, electro acoustics and contemporary jazz in the company of Brazilian musicians Mauricio Takara and Guilherme Granado.
